Construction of the Templar-Pontifical Castle of Peñíscola began in 1294 and was completed in 1307. This fortress occupies the highest part of the rock where the old town is located. It is a completely walled fortress connected to the mainland by a narrow sand strip that formerly disappeared when there was a storm and that today is occupied by the city. The Castle of Peñiscola was declared a National Artistic Historical Monument in 1931.
